Whittle Your Waistline Wednesday ~ Week 2
Hey everybody! For the second installment of WYWW I want to tell you how much I admire Bethenny Frankel of The Real Housewives of New York and, more importantly I think, bestselling author of “Naturally Thin”. She is smart, beautiful, HI-larious, and tough as nails. Nothing has been handed to this girl. Hard work and sheer determination have gotten her where she is today – and deservedly so. She is a natural foods Chef and will soon be adding “Mommy” to her list of accomplishments!
One of the reasons I am fascinated with Bethenny is because, it turns out, she too has struggled with her weight in the past! She, however, has unlocked the key for recognizing and dealing with things that may trigger overeating. The book is written in her voice and if you are a fan, you can absolutely hear her talking to you. It’s funny and real and makes you say “YES” out loud throughout. She really has helped me to change the way I look at food.
There are 10 rules outlined in Naturally Thin and one of my favorites is rule #7 “Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself” : In part it reads “This rule encompasses one of the most important things you can do for yourself: stop binge eating. Never do it again. Just knowing you can have any food you want can keep you from going overboard…”
Bethenny makes healthy choices, but she is also realistic (she loves a good steak!) – she eats what she wants- she just doesn’t eat ALL of it. She will just have a few bites and really take the time to enjoy those bites. It is said that if you really pay close attention, after three bites of anything, you aren’t tasting it anymore, you’re just eating it. I’ve tried it and it is true! Bethenny’s new book is out and full of great recipes. “The Skinny Girl Dish” is definitely on my list of books to buy Stat!
It’s been a great week – a busy week! I have put in the exercise and made good food choices. It has been at least 7 days since my last diet coke. (Wow, that almost sounded like I was in confession…)
We would love to hear what you all are doing to get and/or stay healthy! Here’s what I am eating – warning - it’s a little hard core today!
FIRST THING
Big glass of water!
BREAKFAST
1 nice cup of coffee w/splash of lowfat half/half
1 scoop EAS Vanilla Whey Protein Powder in shaker with 8 oz. water
SNACK
(after gym)
2 cups steamed broccoli (it’s got almost equal amounts protein and carbs!!) sautéed with a bit of olive oil, garlic and sprinkle of pine nuts – red pepper flakes replace salt! YUM!
Water!
LUNCH
1 scoop EAS Chocolate Whey Protein Powder in shaker with 8 oz. water
SNACK
Several baby carrot sticks – they are sweet AND crunchy
Big glass water
DINNER
Grilled chicken breast topped with fresh bruschetta topping
Fresh baby spinach sautéed with garlic in a bit of olive oil
LATE NIGHT SNACK
6 oz. skim or lowfat milk
Again – this is just meant to be an example as I am trying to give myself a little jump start and I know what I can handle…believe me, I enjoy eating and just want to get back to being the healthiest me I can be. Food is love and I put a lot of it into what I cook!
Things I am avoiding: Salt (if I really need a salt fix I will eat a small dill pickle), Bubbles (i.e., soda, beer), alcohol, cheese, crackers (I have a serious love of Wheat Thins and Pepperidge Farms crackers).
All right – your turn!

Jen, I am a huge fan of Bethany as well ~ thanks for reminding me to pick up her book!
I had your broccoli dish yesterday for lunch and it was super delicious and filling!
Looks like I'll be trying your chicken dish soon ~ sounds good!
What a great article Jen! Bethenny is an inspiration and has such a healthy outlook on life and food. I'm working more on exercise right now since it use to be such a huge part of my life. Baby steps for me. As you know Jen, I'm like a crack addict with my diet coke and coffee. My husband has been on a big health kick so I'm hoping that will help me get back on track. Looking forward to next WWW.
Going to walk on the treadmill, thanks for the inspiration. Broccoli for lunch it is!
Hey Jen, hard core, but doable. You Go! I have to admit, other than the business & news channels I don't watch/follow shows on tv, except but a couple and one of them happens to be the Real Housewives-they're all intense, but love their moxie, and really who doesn't have issues, like with food, right? Thank god for WYWW. I think like Bethany, I don't deprive myself of food because it'll only make me binge on it, so I minimize intake on the yummies, eat light 4-5 days & enjoy a great meal 1 day of the week. My family loves exotic food, e.g. sushi & Thai, and for me, it would drive me crazy not to have it. I also try to exercise so I can indulge. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the input everyone! This is great stuff! Mel, you are forgiven for your Diet Coke addiction my friend - you have bigger fish to fry AND you're in great shape girl! Ros, I could seriously go for some Pad Thai with chicken and LOT's of HOT sauce right about now! Tracy, yay for broccoli! Now, if we could just get Bethenny herself to make a comment....hmmm. I'll go send a couple of tweets.
