I know many of you already know the story of how Womentorz came to be, but I thought I would share a recent article submission for a blog:

One day while exercising on my recumbent bicycle I decided that I could be more efficient if I could check out my email, and work on projects for my business on my laptop while getting some exercise. So, the first chance I got, I went to the web, but to my annoyance I was unable to locate any devices that would allow me to multitask in such a way. I was disappointed because I ran two businesses highly reliant on the web, and have two young children requiring me to be efficient with my time. One night as I was trying unsuccessfully to sleep I had an idea about a way I could attach a tray to the recumbent bicycle. The very next day I put my idea on paper, but had no idea what to do next. I visited a local bookstore and bought several books which were helpful. Soon I was talking with a patent attorney, a product development firm, and then a manufacturer. The costs were substantial, but with sacrifice could be handled.  What was truly daunting, however, was the cost of marketing, promotion and bringing the product to a retail outlet. After everybody took their share there would be little left.

In July of 2009 while watching the Kelly and Regis show I was made aware of a unique opportunity. Kelly Ripa was producing a new show on TLC and would be holding a casting call in Chicago in two weeks. I soon found myself with a prototype of my invention and a small recumbent bicycle on a plane heading for Chicago. When I arrived to the casting call with nervous energy I saw that there were thousands of women with the same ambitious goal of getting their product to market. To make a long story short; I wasn’t picked, but I met so many amazing women inventors who expressed the same frustrations as I had. The cost of bringing their invention to market was prohibitive.

At this point I decided to abandon my project until I could find an inexpensive way to have my invention manufactured. At this point I had already made a substantial investment, but didn’t want to proceed to actual production until I could figure out the marketing issue. I started thinking of the huge number of women inventors whose product was ready for sale, but had no venue.  This is when the idea of Womentorz came to be; a place where women inventors could come together as a group for advertising, promotion and marketing of their inventions.  This in turn would create a marketplace and shopping destination for consumers to find unique gifts and gadgets. 

While I was in Chicago, I met a very capable and enthusiastic woman, Jennifer Cannon.  Due to the chaos of the casting call process we were able to talk briefly and exchange contact information.  After I conceived of Womentorz she was among the first to be called.  Jen was immediately on board, and this is the point at which Womentorz was born. 

During our growth as a company I am continually amazed with the remarkable and innovative women we meet every day, and the ideas that they generate.  It pleases me to be able to provide a venue to get their product to market to make possible their success. We’ve had a few challenges to resolve, but with those behind us we are positioned for success in 2010.

Inventor Showcase: Lizzie Lou Shoes

We have been meaning to showcase this invention for some time now and are so honored to have a product of this caliber on Womentorz.  I was thrilled to be given a pair as a gift for our December 21st launch party.  Not only did I look stylish, but my feet were also swimming in a sea of comfort.  With spring and summer in the foreseeable future I proudly put the spotlight on Lizzie Lou Shoes:

Q. How did the design process of Lizzie Lou Shoes begin?

My youngest daughter, Lizzie (often referred to as "Lizzie Lou"), has had an obsession with shoes from the age of two.  She is constantly looking for shoes with "bling."  We were out shopping one day when Lizzie showed me a pair of $200 crystal flip flops and asked whether they came in kids sizes.  Right then it dawned on me:  “Why there isn’t a line of gorgeous flip flops for mother and daughter?”  I took my idea to my cousin, Shilpi, who lives in India.  She had just had a baby girl but wanted to continue working from home.

My cousin and I worked closely together through the development and design process.  Finding the right suppliers and manufacturer was very difficult.  Shilpi's connections in India and experience in clothing manufacture were essential to finding the right ones.  We continue to keep an eye out for the best parts and supplies to ensure that we import a high quality flip flop.

We worked through several design changes before we finalized our first three styles. After a year of development, Lizzie Lou Shoes officially arrived on the market on Mothers Day weekend, 2009.  We launched our business at local boutique in Stone Oak, where I live.  We started with three styles of women's shoes and three matching styles of children's.  Since then we have expanded our women's line with six new styles, and three more in development.

Q. What was your experience like manufacturing your product?  Why was India the best fit for your shoes?

My cousin Shilpi works directly with the manufacturer so I am able to focus on design, marketing, and sales.  We use Internet phone service and email to instantly share new ideas, photos, sketches, and color schemes.  Sometimes our ideas are ahead of the supplier’s capabilities, so we have to re-work our original schemes.  The designs just got better and better once we were able to see how our vision works on a pair of flip flop.

There are definitely pros and cons to working in India.  I believe the quality of the product is amazing, and we have been able to make the shoes on a small scale.  I am not sure we would be able to do that in China.  The disadvantage is, the shipping costs and transit time are very high.

Q. Please tell us about the handcrafted elements that make the overall amazing design.

Each flip flop is hand-stitched and embroidered.  Every sequin, bead, and crystal is hand-sewn to genuine leather straps, which are then cut and sewn on to the uppers of the flip flops.  The individual care that goes into this process makes each shoe unique.  It is not a mass-produced product—there are very limited numbers of each style being made.  Having one is like owning a unique piece of jewelry for your feet!

Q. What has been the most rewarding part of the inventing process?

Just seeing that my vision of the perfect flip flop become real.  It was so rewarding to look down at my feet and see them sparkle, and think back on all the time and energy I put into them.  It was a huge undertaking and at times I wondered if we would have to give up.  But time and patience and determination paid off.

Q. What has been your greatest success with your business?

So far, it’s been having my shoes sold in several popular, high-end boutiques in my hometown,  San Antonio.  I love being out & about and seeing people wearing their "Lizzie Lous."  My clients and friends are always paying me compliments on comfort and style of our line.  I have enjoyed doing something that I can share with so many people, and especially being supported by fellow moms and friends.

Q. What has been the most challenging part of getting your product to market?

First, I had to learn the importing process, including customs and shipping procedures.  I received assistance from the International Trade Center at University of Texas at San Antonio.  They were instrumental in helping me find the correct Harmonized tariff code and understanding all the intricate details of being an importer.

Obviously, any new product needs marketing to put the consumer in touch with the product.  Being a higher priced item, there is a smaller target market of consumers, so branding my product has become essential.

Q. What or who motivates you through those challenging moments?

Reminding myself how lucky I am to be able to stay-at-home with my kids, but still be able to run a fun and exciting business.  It is a win-win for me and my family.

Q. Your shoes are so comfortable!  What makes the soles of the shoe so special?

One of my goals was to make my flip flops comfortable to wear.  So many times women purchase shoes not for how they feel, but for how they look.  Lizzie Lou Shoes offer the best of both.  We found the highest quality EVA  soles available.  Many people don't know that EVA features excellent shock absorbing characteristics and is very lightweight. That’s the reason EVA is used for the insoles that people put into their shoes.  EVA soles are the perfect icing on the cake for the anatomically molded comfort footbeds–at home, in your spare time or on the go.

Q. Is there something that readers would be surprised to learn about you?

Hmmm, not sure.  Maybe that until I came up with the idea for Lizzie Lous, I hadn’t worked outside the home in almost eight years.  It's hard work trying to juggle 3 kids, school activities, taking care of our home and still finding time to run a business.

Q. What were your initial goals?

To design and produce a high quality flip flop that would be affordable, comfortable and unique for mother and daughter.  After our first shipment arrived and was tested and worn, we decided to only focus on the women's line.  The price point for the children's line was too high and would be too hard to turn a profit.  We are working to improve the women’s line and bring in new designs.

Q. What is your background and how does it relate to your company?

 I have a bachelor’s degree in Communications from Trinity University(San Antonio) and have experience in marketing, public relations, and project management.  Before I stayed home with my children, I managed a marketing campaign for IBM and implemented it in Asia and Europe.  The experience of managing a large-scale project in several countries has helped me with the importation and multi faceted of my business.

Partnering For Success

Womentorz was built on the concept of power by numbers. In any industry and situation it's a proven fact that when you come together as a group with similar goals and vision you are much more likely to achieve success.  This not only holds true with our group of members, but also with the networking groups around us.

We know we have said this over and over, but when this marketplace for inventions made by women was built we saw that by forming this group of products with talented women behind them would gain more exposure to all of the products as a whole.  When one product is reviewed or showcased on the site, it brings shoppers to the marketplace to view all of the inventions where in contrast, if the shopper just went to the inventor's solo site they wouldn't see all of the products to add to their shopping cart.  Branching out and forming more relationships just feeds into the original philosophy that Womentorz represents.

In 2010 Womentorz will be partnering with several other companies lead by successful women entrepreneurs across the nation where our expertise and knowledge will complement one another. We will be forming a national front of support during each of our various projects.  We cannot stress how important and beneficial these relationships will be to the success of Womentorz.  You have just started to see a taste of things to come with our new relationship with Entreprenette and Sarah Shaw, who will bring a wealth of knowledge to our followers who don't know where to start with their invention.  You will quickly see more partnerships formed and announced through our blog, tweets and on Facebook. 

Another exciting announcement is that we are advertising on Mom Invented ( where we will be reaching numerous ladies just like us!  Tamara Monosoff, Founder of Mom Invented, Inc., will be releasing her much anticipated books over the coming months, which will garner Mom Invented a great deal of media exposure.  This in turn will bring exposure to Womentorz and our mission.

Inventor Showcase: DivaGirl

We are so excited about having DivaGirl Card Game on Womentorz. What a fun product and gift for the holidays! I don't know about you, but I think it's time to plan a girl's night end with some friends. Here's our interview with Nancy Foley, the inventor of this divalicious game:

1. What prompted you to come up with the idea of DivaGirl Card Game?
After attending a Girls' Night Out party with my friend Liz that lasted into the early morning- we decided it would be fun to develop a Girls' Night Out game that could be played in one evening.

2. What was your experience like manufacturing your product?
This was a totally new experience for both of us. Neither of us have a business background. We did a lot of research and talked with different manufacturing companies. we finally went with a company that actually returned our calls and was very helpful. They educated us about manufacturing and the printing process and were very responsive to all of our questions. So, the process was pretty painless.

We had a blast working with our graphic designer. It was so rewarding to see our ideas come to life through her skills. The creative part of the development was so much fun. We sat around many an evening with a glass wine and talked about everything women love and how to incorporate those ideas into the game.

3. What has been the most rewarding part of the inventing process?

I think the most rewarding part of the inventing process was picking two charities to support. Camp Laurel is located in Pasadena, CA. Camp Laurel works with children who have AIDS and their families. They educate the children on how to live with AIDS. They also sponsor a summer camp for the children to attend where they can just be kids. Camp Laurel also runs an inner city programs for children and their parents.

The other charity is Homemakers. This Charity gives seed money to women in Nigeria who have been forced from their homes due to AIDS. They have to support themselves and their children on their own. Homemakers gives a woman $70 seed money to start a business. Once they are successful, they return the money and it is given to another woman. The women have been very successful in starting their businesses and have been able to support themselves and their children.

4. What has been the most challenging part of getting your product to market?
The most challenging part of getting of our game to market has been just that- getting it into any market. It is very hard to get your foot in the door to the big box stores. I have sent out numerous games and press kits to magazines, tv shows and internet sites hoping to get the game noticed. Girlfriends and spending time with them is a topic I think would make good press. It is frustrating to have something you believe in so much and know women will love but be unable to get the publicity needed to let everyone know about it. We have many ideas to expand the DivaGirl line but can't proceed until we are successful with DivaGirl.

5. What or who motivates you through those challenging moments?

I truly believe in DivaGirl and how much fun it is. Everyone who has played has had a great time and can't wait to play again. Our friends who have played are always on the lookout for Diva gifts and ways to enhance their Diva outfits. Knowing that women can get together and have this much fun makes me determined to continue. The ideas we have to expand- a version for younger girls, dolls, tee-shirts among other ideas keeps me going on. It is frustrating and scary- but I really believe in my product and want to make it a success.

6. What's your favorite Diva indulgence?
For me, my favorite Diva indulgence is a facial. It is so relaxing for me to lie there. I am so relaxed I almost fall asleep.

7. Is there something that readers would be surprised to learn about you?
I don't think there is anything special or surprising about me. I'm a proud mom of two grown children who has a wonderful, supportive family and group of friends. Life would not be as wonderful as it is without them. I am truly blessed.

Creating a Unique Shopping Destination

It feels important at this juncture to make some comparisons, share a bit of insight and generally reiterate the mission.

With holiday shopping in full swing it is clear that most of us, when shopping online, want to do it in one fell swoop if possible. This means most of us are doing our shopping on big sites like Target, Toys R Us, Amazon, etc. We dream of the day that Womentorz is included as a shopping destination with several hundred members and the most innovative and unique offerings.

When we talk about a "mutually supportive environment" that's exactly what we mean. We've said it before and we'll say it again: We believe that getting noticed as a group is more effective than trying to get noticed as individuals. In our opinion people are more likely to return to a marketplace with many choices rather than a site with a sole product.

It is important to remember that your product listing on Womentorz is your "storefront". We have provided the ability for you to link to your Facebook page and upload videos from YouTube - take advantage of that! Make your product shine with quality photos since that is the first thing people see when they come to your page!

Another important thing to remember is that Womentorz "soft-launched" November 1 and launched officially December 1. In that very short amount of time we are now seeing 700 - 1,000 visitors to the site daily. We have over 1,000 fans on Facebook and counting and our blog has become very popular as well.

We cannot always tell you everything that is happening behind the scenes, but want you to know that we will in fact be taping a segment with Karen Rogers of 6ABC Action News (the 4th largest market in the country) once the holiday madness has ended. This type of media opportunity along with the radio interviews and King 5 News piece, pave the way for bigger things. There are people quietly watching from afar - people who could make Womentorz a household name.

The point is that, whether you realize it or not, your products are getting an incredible amount of exposure. When one member is noticed we are all noticed. Several products listed on Womentorz have been chosen for holiday gift guides and one has even received an offer for licensing!

Kat Spellman, who heads our PR team is always looking for ways to get a product featured and has been very successful in doing so. We are continuing to work hard to get our members noticed and need your support in this endeavor as well.

There is a lot of what I like to call "noise" right in front of us, and then there's the BIG PICTURE, looking bright and shiny in the distance...Can you see it?

How to Avoid Holiday Stress

Most of the time, it is the women who experience too much stress when the holidays are approaching. This is because they are the ones who are usually responsible for shopping, decorating, cooking, planning seasonal events, getting gifts, and sending greeting cards. This happens because women tend to stretch themselves too thin and try to do everything, even if there is not enough time. The holidays could also bring on sad memories like the loss of loved ones, jobs, friends, marriages, home, and even health.

Because the holidays almost always bring on joy followed by conditions such as depression, insomnia, exhaustion, irritability, poor appetite, or overeating, it is good to maintain some steps to avoid stress.

Get Rid of Great Expectations

First of all, women need to rid themselves of unrealistic expectations during the holidays. These are usually those that other people expect of them and those that they impose upon themselves. Because women focus on cooking, buying gifts, and attending parties, they end up being stressed over empty wallets and filled-up schedules.

As such, it is very important to keep expectations at a minimum or to do away with them altogether. If women have lesser or no expectations about the holidays, the chances of enjoying simpler and more meaningful happiness are increased.

Here is a guide on how to avoid holiday stress:

* Start planning ten weeks before the holidays. If you have a timetable that you stick to, there is less rushed feeling of accommodating things at the very last minute.

* Define your plans for the holidays by asking people some questions. You would know what and what not to do if you will ask people questions like what they liked best about the previous preparations. Also ask yourself what events or preparations proved more stressful so you can avoid them. It is best if you think back on what made your holidays special minus the stress so these can be recreated.

* Designate roles during the holidays. There is no reason why you have to do everything during the holidays. There are also people in your home that could be asked to do things. Designate roles and functions so that you will have less worries.

* Set your limits accordingly. If you think that limitations should be implemented on the gifts that you should buy or the foods that you should prepare, then you have to set these and tell the people around you about them. If you go by these limitations, there will be less pressure for you to meet everyone’s expectations about the food and the gifts.

There are also other ways to avoid holiday stress. These include limiting the number of people that you should invite to your parties, restricting the frequency of attending holiday events, organizing your gift list, and eliminating long distance visits that may have been stressful for you in the past. Doing so may enable you to enjoy your holidays more with your family and friends.

Look What We Provide For Members

I would like to share with all of our followers and members an example of what we are doing for the inventors on our site. The talented Kat Spellman of The Spellman Company is constantly looking for media opportunities and product reviews. When an opportunity comes up where a member's product fits with what a media source is looking for, we submit their invention for consideration. For example, if an opportunity came up in a travel magazine where they were looking for new products for the modern traveler, we would submit Bed Voyage with a selling pitch. Sometimes the editor would like a sample, but this is an investment in order to receive a great deal of exposure.

1. When did you first realize you had a passion for baking?

During a meditation that I had after a batch of cookies was ruined in a bag, because there weren’t any containers big enough and easy enough to store and carry them in.

3. Tell us a what makes Bakers Sto N Go so innovative?

Bakers Sto 'N Go comes with 4 removable trays that allow your food items to stay intact, looking as beautiful as when you made them. Nothing gets ruined anymore. 4. What has been the most rewarding part of the inventing process?

All the e-mails and phone calls that I get saying how much they love this. And thanking me for making it. There is so much satisfaction in that.

5. What has been the most challenging part of getting your product to market?

Dealing with the large stores, and their pricing demands. Thinking this is a China made product, and not caring about quality and FDA standards.

6. What or who motivates you through those challenging moments?

I keep a strong attitude when it comes to my intentions for this product and know my customers are the ones best served. It keeps me going. The one idol I have is Sara Blakely. She is my silent mentor. She invented Spanx, and her story is great!

7. What’s your favorite thing to bake?

Brownies! Everyone loves them and they are so delicious.

8. If you had a day to spend in any way you choose how would you spend it?

Being a wife and a mom, I would wake up to a clean house, with all the laundry done! Go to the gym, come home, grab a bite to eat, then go play a match of tennis, and win!!! Then catch up on TiVo’d shows, then dinner with friends. Come home to my husband and baby boy, say good-nite, and finally relax! Perfect day!!!
