10 Fun Family Ideas for Earth Day

While Earth Day is about serious matters, why not use it as an opportunity to enjoy your family and focus on fun activities too.
Here are 10 Earth Day ideas everyone can enjoy.

1.     Play Pin the tree on the Earth
One thing the Earth needs is more trees, right? They're being cut down faster than they can be planted. Playing this game is a great way to explain the issue to kids and inspire them (and you, to take action).
This homemade game is made from Ecospun felt (from recycled plastic bottles), but you could make one out of paper if you prefer.
The winning player can be the one who pins the tree closest to North or South America or in an ocean without touching land.

2. Go on an Earth Day Treasure hunt
Write a series of clues on pieces of recycled or pre-used paper, leading from your home around the neighborhood to a "treasure chest" containing some organic treats or small treasures like polished rocks and seashells. The clues should focus on the outdoors and be tailored to the age of the children.

3. Read eco books together. Find a nice nearby tree, sit together beneath it. Read and discuss a meaningful book with an environmental theme like The Giving Tree. Here's a list of great titles for kids of every age.

4. Visit an organic farm, preferably one with animals if you've got kids in tow. Find one near you at www.LocalHarvest.org

5. Volunteer! There are many organizations that will welcome families with children of all ages.

6. Download an Earth Day kit from the EPA. It's filled with loads of ideas for fun activities.

7. As a family, take the 5-minute quiz at Practically Green. Find out how green you are and choose three actions that will improve your score.

8. Start a garden. If you've never done it before or don't have room, just fill a container with the best dirt you can find (be sure the container has drainage). Follow the directions on a package of mixed greens. You'll be nibbling lettuce very quickly. (And a secret you might not know. Children who grow veggies, actually tend to eat them even when they claim not to like them!)
Or plant some trees. You can get 10 trees for free when you join the Arbor Day Foundation.

9. Go no waste for the day. That means no purchasing anything in a package or at least, reusing or recycling any packaging, newspaper or anything else possible. It also means not tossing food scraps. If you don't want to eat it, compost, put into the freezer for later soup making, share it with neighbors, anything but throw it into the trash. Who knows, maybe you'll make a habit of no waste!

10. Do a recycled craft. Make birdhouses from milk cartons. Craft a solar oven from a pizza box (or any cardboard box). Download a list of endangered species and create your own hand drawn calendar. Empty out a drawer each, but instead of throwing away what's you don't want, challenge yourselves to make something from it!

Whatever you do on Earth Day, spend a bit of time noticing what nature gives us and give a little something back!

Gifting Opportunity to Alyssa Milano

We loved Alyssa Milano on Who’s the Boss and have watched her blossom into a beautiful woman, and now we can watch her blossoming into a wonderful mother.  Alyssa and husband David Bugliari are expecting their her first child, a baby boy.  Here’s a message she recently posted:

As fun as it was reading all of your gender predictions on Twitter, I’m really bad at keeping secrets and had to share (not to mention, I was bound to unintentionally slip at some point). David and I are elated to announce that we are having a baby boy.  We can’t wait to meet him.  Boys names, anyone? Leave me suggestions in the comments!

Peace,
Light,
And Love,
Alyssa, David and Baby(boy) Bugliari

Celeb Hoopla personally spoke with Alyssa’s mother who is very excited about us honoring her daughter.  I can now see why Alyssa seems like such a sweet person.

Here are the details of the gifting:

    * Only 10 spots available
    * $75 per product
    * Deadline to reserve your spot – April 6th

Instructions on where to send your product will be sent out to all gifters once we near the deadline.  Don't miss this opportunity!

Necessity is not the mother of invention … these women are!

Written By: Paul Niemann
Market Launchers, Inc.
“Very learned women are to be found, in the same manner as female warriors; but they are seldom or never inventors.” -- Voltaire

What do windshield wipers, COBOL and Scotchgard have in common?  All were invented by women!

We will take a look at the above three inventions that have had a major impact on society. In addition, here are a few other well-known products created by female inventors that will be featured in future columns:

•        Bulletproof vests
•        Fire Escapes
•        Laser Printers
•        Flat-bottom grocery bags
•        Certain drugs that fight diseases such as childhood leukemia, herpes, gout and the first drug to fight AIDS drug, AZT

By the way, how many of the inventors of the above products can you name?

Windshield Wipers:

Some inventions are created as the result of a person simply trying to solve a problem. That’s what Mary Anderson of Alabama did in 1903 when she invented windshield wipers. On a trip to New York City, while touring the city on a streetcar, she noticed that the motorman had to continually get out to wipe the snow and ice from the windshield. The man had tried a variety of solutions to this problem but nothing had worked.

After making a quick drawing in her sketchbook, Mary came up with a solution to the problem. Her solution, which would be patented a year later, allowed the motorman to sweep the snow and ice away with a device that was operated from inside the car. This became the forerunner to the modern windshield wiper. Even though wipers had become standard equipment on American cars by 1913, Mary never profited from them.

The U.S.S. Hopper:

Grace Murray Hopper developed COBOL (which stands for COmmon Business Oriented Language) in 1959 while she was in the Navy, and she was also the Navy’s first female admiral. COBOL was more like natural English than any previous computer language. It was the first programming language mandated by the Department of Defense for its applications and, in recognition of her contributions, the Navy named one of their destroyers in her honor, the U.S.S. Hopper.

COBOL served as a foundation for later computer languages and it’s likely that we wouldn’t have the World Wide Web today if it weren’t for COBOL. Another contribution that Grace Hopper made was the term “computer bug.” No, she didn’t invent it, but she is the one who coined the term. She did this when a computer processor had stopped working due to a moth that was stuck in it.

Scotchgard:

Some new products are the result of an accident. Penicillin, Post-It Notes, Silly Putty and Ivory Soap are all examples of accidental discoveries. You can put Scotchgard in this category, too.

Patsy Sherman created Scotchgard in 1952 while working as a chemist for 3M in Minneapolis. Sherman’s team had been trying to develop a new kind of rubber for use in aircraft fuel lines when an assistant in her chemistry lab accidentally dropped a beaker full of a liquid rubber mixture onto the floor, splashing onto Sherman’s white canvas sneakers.

When they tried to wash it off, the water and solvents beaded up and ran off the sneakers. Sherman and fellow chemist Sam Smith realized that the mixture could be used to protect fabrics from water and other fluids. After three years of work, the mixture was patented and released as Scotchgard Protector ™ in 1956.

In a 1997 speech to students, Sherman explained that being an inventor does not require a lot of money or education, nor is it a matter of age or gender. She once remarked, “How many great discoveries would never have occurred were it not for accidents?”

At this point, what have we learned about the abilities of women inventors?

Is it that women would achieve MORE success than their male counterparts if they had the same opportunities as men? Or LESS success? Or are women and men equal as inventors?

The answer to that question is as tough to figure out as removing red wine from a couch that wasn’t protected by Patsy Sherman’s invention.

The Benefits of Incorporation

Whether you’re just considering a new business idea or already act as a sole proprietorship or general partnership, you may wonder if incorporating your business is right for you. Discover why the benefits of incorporation can outweigh any downsides.

The pros

  • Secure your assets, gain tax breaks. Corporation owners enjoy limited liability protection, and are typically not personally responsible for business debts. So creditors can’t pursue your home or car to pay business debts. Another plus: corporations often gain tax advantages, writing off such things as health insurance premiums, savings on self-employment taxes, and life insurance.
  • Grow your corporation for now—and the future. Incorporating bolsters credibility, and may help you reach potential new customers and partners. And while you can’t live forever—your corporation can. Even if an owner dies or sells interest, the corporation still exists.
  • Easy transfer and faster funds. Corporation ownership can be easily transferable (with some restrictions on S corporations). Capital can be raised more easily through the sale of stock. Another advantage is that many banks prefer handling loans with incorporated borrowers.
  • Ready for retirement. Retirement funds and qualified plans, like a 401(k), can be easier to establish.

The cons

Corporations do have some potential disadvantages, including:
  • Double taxation. C corporations are subject to double taxation of corporate profits when income is distributed as dividends. This can be avoided by electing S corporation tax status with the IRS.
  • Ongoing fees. You must file articles of incorporation with the state, plus applicable fees. Many states impose ongoing fees—which are steeper for a corporation than for a sole proprietorship or general partnership.
  • More record keeping. Corporations must follow initial and annual record-keeping requirements—which sole proprietorships, general partnerships and limited liability companies (LLCs) avoid.

Why Networking and Meeting Other Women Inventors is so Important

We have all heard the saying, "It's who you know, not what you know.", and in many cases this is true when it comes to increasing business and being truly successful in marketing your invention.  You can't just develop a product, publish a website and expect people to know how or where to find you.  You simply don't exist until you're out there meeting people and letting them know about your product and where it can be found.

This is where Womentorz and other social networking forums come into play....and they should ALL be utilized!!!  The more places you are the more people you can meet.  Even if you simply have a presence on all of them you are doing great.  I would suggest picking your top three favs though and spending the bulk of your time on those.  As long as you're out there meeting and connecting is the most important thing.  This is especially true if you're an inventor.

It can be lonely out there!

Attend social events and have fun!!!
It's easy to get consumed in our daily lives and forget how important it is to meet like-minded individuals with similar passions and aspirations.  They keep you motivated and inspired.  Inventors are a special breed of people who feed off of each other.  When you're on your own and not surrounded by this energy it's challenging to stay creative and innovative.

We've witnessed this energy during our Skype Parties.  These parties end up having a life of their own.  We thought we had to have a structured forum, but when the creative juices started flowing between the women who were sharing their experiences and frustrations we didn't want to stop what we were witnessing.  There was so much knowledge being thrown around.  It is amazing to witness!

The parties are easy to be a part of!  The women simply sign up to be part of the Womentorz group and when the scheduled time comes Skype calls them all up.  They can come and go as they please, so attending the party even for just a little while is manageable for most schedules.  The parties are every month and only last an hour, so every inventor that's part of the group should be able to attend.  Plus, it's FREE!!!  What's better than that?

The parties were a big hit when Womentorz was smaller, but now that we've grown we can't stress enough how important these networking events can be.  You can learn so much from each other and the more diverse the group the better!  If you're having a problem most likely one of the party goers will be able to brainstorm with you to find a solution.

All social networks are built to help you grow your business and be successful.  It's important to utilize them as much as possible!  We hope to see you at the next party!!!

Group Coaching with Jim DeBetta - helping inventors realize their dreams!

This is an amazing opportunity for inventors to receive Jim DeBetta's life changing coaching that most people spend thousands to receive with his new Group Coaching Program!  Read the Coaching Programs Jim DeBetta has to offer....

Most inventors want the same thing – to make money from their idea. You have a great idea that others can benefit from. You see successful inventions everyday when you go shopping and retail stores are filled with products that someone created. Why can’t you be that person that enjoys great success?

Most inventors face the same basic problem – they lack the knowledge of the proper steps to inventing. They often skip critical steps in an attempt to get their product on the market which results in it being improperly developed and just plain unsellable. They are also not financially prepared for the long road ahead. To enjoy success in this high risk business, you must understand the process and execute with precision.
Are you an invention entrepreneur who needs expert guidance to make your idea a reality? Are you nearly ready to sell to retailers or license your product? Do you need assistance with learning everything from how to find a factory to manufacture your product to how to sell to major retailers? If you are you unsure of what to do next and are afraid to spend your hard earned money incorrectly, then Jim’s Group and Private Coaching Programs are exactly what you need to help get your invention off the ground and on a path to success.

Global Partnerships Feature Entrepreneur: Edelma Altamirano—

Womentorz is so proud to be affiliated and support the efforts of Global Partnerships and all of the wonderful things they are doing for women around the world.  Our mission is to not only support women entrepreneurs on a national level, but also encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit on a global scale and Global Partnerships fulfills that mission!

About Global Partnerships

Global Partnerships is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to expand opportunity for people living in poverty. They do this by supporting sustainable solutions like microfinance throughout Latin America. What makes them unique is their focus on partnering with socially-focused microfinance institutions that reach people traditionally left behind—like women and the rural poor. Their partners also provide additional services alongside microcredit--including agricultural assistance, healthcare, and business training—to provide a stronger foundation for progressing out of poverty.

Global Partnerships currently work in 7 countries in Latin America and through their partners, they are serving 844,000 people.  For more information please visit their website at www.globalpartnerships.org.

Feature Entrepreneur: Edelma Altamirano

Edelma Altamirano of León, Nicaragua, is a mother, a successful business owner and a cervical cancer survivor.  Age 37, Edelma has been a microloan borrower with Pro Mujer, a Global Partnerships partner, for seven years. With help from Pro Mujer, she has built up a successful clothing resale business. She travels to Managua on public transportation to buy her wares three times a week and then travels to Honduras three other days a week to sell.

Edelma credits Pro Mujer not only with helping her establish a successful business, but also with helping her build her self-confidence. She never dreamed she would be a leader, but now, as president of her village bank, she takes pride in motivating members of her group.

Perhaps most important, she says that Pro Mujer’s approach of combining microcredit and health services saved her life. In 2006, Edelma received a health screening offered at her village bank meeting. Her Pap test detected early stages of cervical cancer. Pro Mujer arranged for her to see a specialist and have a biopsy and funded her subsequent surgery. She is now in remission.

Edelma’s children are well on their way to securing professional careers: her daughter is in third year of pharmacy studies and her son is finishing high school. And because of the fact that Edelma received health care through Pro Mujer, they still have a mother.  Edelma, meanwhile, has added health promotion to her leadership duties. “I try to motivate and give strength to women who are experiencing what I experienced,” she says. “I tell women that they should have their yearly Pap, take care of themselves,
and not leave health for later.”

Celeb Hoopla is Accepting Gifts for Christina Applegate for the Next Two Weeks!

Between January 10 and the 21st Celeb Hoopla will be accepting products to send to Christina Applegate in preparation for the birth of her bundle of joy.  Her husband accidentally slipped and said that they’re having a little girl and that they couldn’t be happier.  She has had a rough pregnancy, so this would definitely bring a smile to her face.   She may give birth during the process as her due date is very near.  Either way, this is a prime time to congratulate her on such a joyous occasion.

This is an invaluable marketing opportunity to start the new year.  Your package will include a letter of endorsement by Celeb Hoopla, which will provide a description of your product as well as your address in hopes that a thank you will be sent.  Obviously we can’t guarantee a return note or photos, but there’s more of a likelihood when it’s easy to find.  You are still able to say that Christina has your product.
You must hurry…..there are only 15 spots available!!!

This service normally costs over $300, but because we are mass gifting to one celebrity who knows about our promotion, we can offer this service for ONLY $97 per product.  This includes the shipping cost to send your product to the celebrity.  You will still need to ship your gift to the Celeb Hoopla headquarters in order for us to prepare your package.   You won’t be grouped in with other products besides being mailed at the same time….you will have your own FedEx Box that can be tracked.

You may be wondering how you take advantage of this awesome opportunity.  Just email info@womentorz.com with your PayPal email address and we will start the process along with an address to send your beautifully presented product.  Because the Celeb Hoopla name is attached to the product, we will need to screen for quality and relevance.  It is important to include a description of your product in your email for this purpose as well as to use in our endorsement letter.  Payment will need to be made prior to the 21st in order for us to send your gift.

Don’t miss this priceless and timeless marketing tool!!!  Be sure to share this with others.

The Power of Celebrity Gifting

It's easy to fall into the traditional avenues of promoting and marketing your product and/or service.  We often forget how powerful celebrity endorsement can be.  When I say endorsement, I don't mean that they have publicly supported your product, which obviously is a huge deal.  This can happen, but not by just sitting there and it doesn't usually happen often.  You still need to send your product to the celebrity regardless.  Another form of endorsement can simply be a thank you letter that they send back to you, or a statement from their contact of what they thought of your gift.  Just the fact that you sent your product to a celebrity and that they have it in their hands is a priceless marketing tool you are able to use for years to come.

Selecting a celebrity who you like and who you think would love your product is a definite plus and must.  You shouldn't be sending your product to just any celebrity.  Know your market and your celebrities.  Even though we would all love to have an A List celebrity receive our product, many times they have been so inundated with gifts over the years that they no longer accept them.  Don't underestimate the power of even D List celebrities.  It may not be your ideal choice, but they are well known by the public and could possibly become A List over time.

Obviously, you can do this yourself, but it's difficult to get the connections and have managers or agents take you seriously.  It definitely helps to have a third party who is known to screen products and only send quality merchandise as your spokesperson.  This is where Celeb Hoopla comes into play.  We are highly respected in the industry and can give you the third party endorsement and guarantee of delivery you're in need of.

This service normally costs thousands of dollars with other gifting agencies where you're usually lumped in with other products.  You won't be spending thousands of dollars with Celeb Hoopla either.  We can give you a customized quote depending on the celebrity of choice.  Obviously, the more popular the celebrity the more work is involved.

When you're thinking about your budget don't forget to keep celebrity gifting as an essential marketing tool for 2011!!!
